Timber Joist FAQs

Building a structurally sound deck or floor starts with reliable framing, and 6×2 treated timber joists are the backbone of that project. We understand that calculating the correct span, setting the right spacing, and understanding the importance of the treatment level can be confusing for first-time builders. To help ensure your project is safe, solid, and long-lasting, we’ve compiled answers to the most common questions. Check out the FAQs below for guidance on framing your new outdoor space.

While commonly referred to as “6×2” (inches), the actual metric size is typically 150mm x 47mm. The timber is usually “regularised,” meaning the edges are slightly rounded and the faces smoothed for easier handling, which accounts for the slight difference from the rough sawn nominal measurement.

We stock a variety of lengths to suit different projects, typically including 2.4m, 3.0m, 3.6m and 4.8m. Please check the individual product listings for current stock availability.

6×2 timber is highly versatile and robust. It is commonly used for: Decking sub-frames: Providing a strong base for decking boards. Floor joists: Supporting flooring in extensions or lofts. Roof construction: Used as rafters or ceiling joists. Heavy-duty wall studding: For external walls or partition walls requiring extra strength.

Yes, our 6×2 timber is pressure treated (Tanalised), making it resistant to rot, fungal decay, and insect attack. This makes it suitable for external projects like decking and garden structures. However, for cuts made during installation, we recommend treating the exposed ends with a wood preservative.

Yes. Although the timber is pressure treated, cutting it exposes the inner wood which may not be fully penetrated by the preservative. We strongly recommend applying an end-grain preservative to any cross-cuts or notches to maintain the timber’s integrity.

For outdoor structural work, always use galvanized or coated exterior screws/bolts (such as timber drive screws or carriage bolts) to prevent rust and corrosion, which can weaken the structure over time.
